Cleaning & Sterilisation of Instruments

Instruments are cleaned thoroughly using recommended techniques.  High pressure steam autoclaves are then used to sterilise the instruments.  Autoclaves are serviced and tested regularly to ensure that they always function correctly. Decontamination staff are trained and regularly updated in the correct use of all decontamination equipment. The cleaning and sterilisation of instruments and equipmenrt happens in a separate room called a Local Decontamination Unit (LDU). Within this unit there are separate areas for dirty instruments that are about to be cleaned and sterilised and another area where clean instruments are then packed and stored ready for use.
