STOPTOBER - like October but without cigarettes!

Tomorrow is the first day of October or Stoptober if your taking part. And if you are a smoker there are many reasons to sign up.

Smoking can lead to many dental problems. Most commonly we hear smokers complaining of stained or discolored teeth. This is due to the nicotine or tar in tobacco. Luckily this effect can be reversed using cosmetic treatments such as jet polishing or whitening, however these can be costly treatments.

Smoking and other tobacco products can also lead to gum disease and a majority of the time the effects of this can be irreversible affecting the attachment of bone and soft tissue to your teeth. More specifically, smoking interferes with the normal function of gum tissue cells making smokers more susceptible to infections, such as periodontal disease, and also seems to impair blood flow to the gums - which may affect wound healing and ultimately lead to tooth loss.

If increased risk of tooth loss isn't enough to make you to quit then consider this: the majority of mouth cancer cases continue to be as a result of smoking and tobacco use. Around one in five people in the UK currently smoke, which accounts for roughly two in every three mouth cancer cases.

Not only does smoking affect your dental Health but there are many further health benefits. The image below lists just some of the positive effects of going smoke free over a given period.

So are you ready to quit now? If so go to for more help and information on signing up.
